Acupuncture has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for thousands of years now but it has recently been accepted for use in Western Medicine for the treatment of specific musculoskeletal injuries.
Whilst acupuncture principals are largely formed from the TCM perspective there will always be a TCM influence on our treatments. Physiotherapist will use scientific evidence based practice to form their acupuncture treatments. Research suggests acupuncture can alleviate pain by promoting the release of natural pain killers, promote healing by improving circulation and relax connective tissue.
This alternative intervention has proved to be very effective when used in conjunction with other manual therapy techniques. Acupuncture can also be used in isolation and can benefit patients who suffer from:
Acute or chronic injuries • Arthritis or Rheumatism • Back and Neck Pain • Sports Injuries • Headaches • Muscle and Joint problems
The foot is truly a mechanical marvel. A highly complex structure that not only enables the ability to walk, run and jump but also plays an instrumental role in the absorption of huge forces experienced by the body during these motions.
On average we take 4000 steps a day – with each step the foot experiences between 1.5 and 2 times our body weight and upto 9 times body weight whilst running. With such forces and repetition any mechanical inefficiency of foot or lower limb function is multiplied many times over. potentially placing excessive stress upon soft tissue and supportive structures of the foot, ankle, knee, hip and lower back. This the causative process for many lower limb injuries.
A Biomechanical assessment by our Podiatrist seeks to identify these mechanical inefficiencies during walking and running using motion and static analysis techniques. Following an assessment treatments options include the construction of bespoke orthotics that seek to re-balance foot and lower limb function – and alter strain placed on injured body structures. Further to this- referral to our Physiotherapist or sports rehabilitation therapist to assist further with inefficiencies identified by the Biomechanical assessment is common place and part of a complete, thorough treatment process.
Functional training for your chosen sport will lead to better joint mobility and stability, as well as more efficient moment patterns. Improving your intrinsic strength secific to your goal & sport will enable better outcomes whatever level you take part. Our team will provide specific functional rehabilitative sessions to enable you to reach your maximum potential whilst recovering from injury or whilst training to reach your goal.
Strength & Conditioning
Strength and Conditioning seeks to improve the athletic ability of an individual so that they can physically perform their given activity to a better standard.
A Strength and Conditioning coach will assess the movement patterns and energy systems used in your given activity and will look to improve your physical ability to meet these requirements. They will not look to interfere with a person’s technical performance of a sport, but they will make them physically stronger, more powerful, agile, faster and fitter so that they have the potential to perform at a higher standard.
Here at MM Physiotherapy all therapists are qualified to high levels and experienced in delivering hands on treatment for wide variety of sports and non-sporting injuries, complaints and general maintenance issues.
The benefits of massage as a musculoskeletal intervention are vast and the delivery can be adapted to suit the patient. Sports specific massage has been shown to be advantageous as a pre or post-event preventative tool (prehabilitation) and can be used for rehabilitation in the event of an injury. Massage can also be used to increase flexibility and decrease tension, break up scar tissue (which left untreated leaves us vulnerable to re-injury), improve circulation and reducing swelling, spasms and cramping. It can also be beneficial to patients who suffer with recurrent cervicogenic headaces and release endorphins – our ‘happy hormone’.
At MM Physiotherapy massage will often be used in combination with our physiotherapy treatments but we also take appointments purely for massage for relaxation & pain relief.
